In order to have strength you need to trust

When you're at the gym and you're lifting weights you normally have a spotter. There's someone there with you to help you when you feel like the weight is too much. That's always helpful right?? You have someone there who you know will always have your back. Most importantly, you have someone you can trust will always help you carry the weight when it feels too heavy for you to carry alone. Someone who you trust to help you become stronger.

We all have trust issues in some way, shape, or form… if we don’t call it that we say that we’re skeptical. It happens all the time. We see something or we hear an idea and we don’t trust it because we think that it just doesn’t make sense. The key here is we think it doesn’t make sense. Sometimes it’s good not to trust certain things or certain people. They turn out to be just as bad as we thought, and we’ve dodged a bullet. But what happens when that someone or something we don’t trust is God??

As much as we say this doesn’t happen or that we trust in God 100% we don’t. That’s human nature in us. We are skeptics and when something doesn’t make sense to us we tend not to trust it, even if it does come from the creator of all things.

One lesson that I have learned throughout the year is to listen to God even when the idea sounds crazy and even when it means you have to let go of your own plans. One reason we might not want to trust God is that it goes against what we had planned for ourselves. Sometimes I laugh at myself when I think about the plans I used to have for my life when I was 8 or 9. Many of those things never happened and my views on life took a 360. Since I’m older and my connection with God is much stronger than it was then, I am learning that my ways may not always be God’s ways. This is why I can’t trust him or choose not to; my ways are my ways and I want my ways to prevail.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act” Pslam 37:5 (ESV)

Committing fully to the Lord is how the grow stronger in our source. Yes we have access to the source, but if we don’t trust in God he becomes useless. It’s like we have God with us but we don’t trust him to navigate our lives.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)

A big part of it is giving our life back to the person who created it. A problem with being independent is we believe that means taking control of our lives. But giving away control comes with anxiety, right?? We are anxious when we have to trust in other people. We hate not being in control because we don’t know the outcome. Here’s something wonderfully scary:

God already knows the outcome even when we don’t. It’s wonderful because he already has a plan. It’s scary because we have no clue as to what the plan is. That’s the important thing about trusting in God. We don’t need to know the outcome. We know who God is and what he says to us. He will never fail no matter how long it takes. Trust in God and you will gain strength from your source like you never thought you could.
