What you put in determines what comes out

With coffee, you want the best quality right?? You want to have the best coffee beans that can give you the best flavor. You want to be able to taste the different flavors and richness of the coffee. What beans you use determines the quality of your coffee. The same goes for our spirit. We need to start taking the time to focus on what goes into our spirits so that we can have the best quality and give that to others.

We all strive to know God better, but we need to take the time to work out what’s in ourselves as well. Since we know that God is our source, we have to determine what is going into our Spirit. What you put in determines what comes out is a very famous phrase. We’ve heard it in some way or another whether it’s regarding what we say or how we treat people. All of these things are determined by how we choose to feed our spirit.

"God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth" John 4:24 (NIV)

Feeding our spirit is important. God wants us to worship him in Spirit and in truth, yet we tend to forget that. We only worship him when it’s necessary or when we need something or of course when we are looking for a miracle in our lives. In order to worship him at all times, we must learn to constantly feed ourselves with things that make our spirit stronger. Investing in our spiritual wellbeing is just as important, if not more important, than working on our bodies. Just like our bodies, our spirits need to be well fed. We need to give ourselves the right nourishment in order to have the strength we need to have.

One way that we can do this is by being around the right people. One thing I know about me is that when I hang around people, I tend to catch their habits. Whether it’s a saying or simply how they do certain things, I can quickly change my behavior to match theirs. Many times, it’s involuntary but also just simply what happens after being around certain people for a while.

Now, this can either be a good thing or bad when it comes to building our strength with Christ. If we are constantly around people who don’t have the best attributes and we start picking up on their behaviors, we might still have our strength, but we might not be using it in the best way. We must work harder to find people who can make us stronger. Having people around can be good for us. They are people we can benefit from but also people who makes us want to have a strong connection with God.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindess goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" Gallatians 5:22-23

In order to bear fruit of the spirit like the scripture says we need to be eating the right fruit as well. We need to be around people who are faithful to God, peaceful and joyful. Even though there will be times when we don’t feel that way all the time, there are people who strive to be joyful and truly are. We must be around people who are like because there is something, we can learn from them. We can see kindness and joy, but we can’t necessarily do it. The one thing we must do is connect with our Spirit. We know who our source is, now it’s just time to get around the right things that can help us strengthen our connection to our source.

Coming into the new year evaluate what you have been placing into your spirit for this past year. Truly reflect on it. Maybe even write it down. Once you've done that think about what needs to change. Maybe you need to have different habits or start being around different people. Whatever it is, now is a perfect time to reflect on your heart and what things can be improved to make your spirit stronger.
